Where I Am Is Caused By Me

from Nobody Joins a Cult by Joe Gould

/

about

In his trial over historic and ongoing abuse as head of NXIVM, Keith Raniere said 'Where I am is caused by me. This is all my fault," before going on to blame the victims. However brief a moment it was, it feels important to close out this album on an admission of the effect of these groups.
Often the music I write for the podcast needs to accompany some quite dark thoughts and deeds, but the final theme we hear on the album is from a section of hope. It is bittersweet, like all products of tragedy, but to me, this is what hope sounds like - waves of crashing percussion and synths, rising but breathing, groups of three creating triangular strength, and through it all, a memory of what grief has passed and changed us. Without that memory, we might be happier - but it's the memory that gives our happiness meaning.
